FAQ
What is a Bentwood Ring?
Bentwood rings are crafted by steaming and bending thin strips of wood around the circumference of a ring mandrel to create the form of the ring, forming a number of layers and bending with the grain gives the ring a strength that other wooden rings will not benefit from.
The strips of wood can be obtained through either planing pieces of wood to create shavings or using real wood veneers.
Any inlays are then added and the ring is finished off with a waterproof protecive coating.
They are then polished to a high gloss or a satin finish.
Strong, unique and lightweight.
How should I find my ring size?
If you do not know your ring size you can visit a jeweller who will measure you accurately.
If you wish to measure for yourself ring sizers are readily available online and are inexpensive. I would recocmend the solid hoop style ones, and not an adjustable sizer.
Where I offer ring width options, I will ensure your ring is within 0.5mm of the size you select. e.g. if you order a 6mm ring it will be finished at between 5.5mm and 6.5mm.
Due to the nature of natural woods, this allows me to avoid areas with grain irregularities at the edges of your ring.
Can a bentwood ring be resized?
Yes it can.
A misconception I see online a lot seems to be that a wooden ring of this tyoe can not be resized and I fuly understand the logic, unlike a metal ring it can not be stretched or bent to change the size once formed.
However the protective coating is built up in layers and with the adding or removal of some of this coating from the inner circumference of your ring we can increase or decrease by around half a size.
Larger size changes are not possible, but if you got your size entirley wrong we will make a replcament and swap it for you. (If you have an engraving we will need to charge a restocking fee of up to 25% as we can not resell your original ring)
How to care for my ring?
So a bentwood ring will need a little additional consideration in some circumstances.
They are very strong structurally and it would take a serious effort to crush one.
They are fully coated and waterpoof.
To prolong the life of your ring I give the following general advice, in circumstances where it is likely to be scuffed or scratched wear gloves or remove it (much like a metal ring).
You can wear it in baths, showers or even the sea, but I would reccomend romoving it if going in treated weater i.e. a pool or hot tub.
It can get wet when doing tasks such as washing up with gentle dish detergents, however I would advise the removal of your ring if using stronger cleaning chemicals, bleach, glue and grease removers etc.
What if my ring gets damaged?
Simple, we will repair it for you.
The protective coating on your ring will keep it safe from the elements and impacts. However the coating can wear over time, it can chip it mistreated and if it sustains a heavy impact the coating may crack (your ring should not).
Please contact us if any of these things happen and we will look at repairing or refinishing your ring for you. If you have had your ring less than 2 years we will do this free of charge (we only ask that you cover postage costs each way).
If it has been longer than 2 years there may be a small charge, but this will depend on the amount of work required and the extent of the damage.
If all else fails and your ring can not be repaired to a wearable condition, we will repair it so you can have it as a keep sake and offer you a generous discount on a replacement ring.
